Taiwan Hakka Wedding Culture *18SX*

Most of the culture stories written here were told by my homestay parents and the local people in HsinChu. So, there is no salt and paper added to the flavor.

FYI, I have been staying in Taiwan for approximately 7 weeks for cultural exchange under Aiesec organization. Thereby, I did some observation, food tasting, traveling which were a worthwhile and fun experience for me.

One fine night, I attended a wedding in Taiwan. It was so random because we were asked to attend at the very last minute for the sake of getting-to-know the wedding culture. The funny thing was we weren’t invited by the hosts and we just showed up without giving any red packets. I think the homestay parent that we followed did give, couldn’t remember though. Normally, Hakka citizens live in suburb areas because by that time they came to Taiwan, most of the city areas were dominated by  Minang race (福建). The wedding venue was located in QiuQiongHu, HsinChu. On the way there, we by passed a quiet long winding road and dark jungles which were quite adventurous and amazing to see via the car window.

I was excited by the time we arrived. The wedding atmosphere was quite similar to a typical Chinese wedding culture in Malaysia until I saw something else. Nevertheless, the food was quite unique too.

Most of the crowd was upper middle-aged citizens, and were Hakka undeniably

Overall, the dishes were quite simple but tasted not that bad (told by my friends) as I did not eat any meaty stuffs other than kept on drinking the juice

Now, here comes the differences between Msia & Taiwan wedding culture (in certain regions/races). Throughout the wedding dinner, we were entertained by sexy girls singing different type of songs on stage/off stage.

1

The singing routines was unique. Firstly, the AA female singer would cover up her body by wearing a cardigan/coat while singing the first song. After that, they will just take off their cardigan/coat leaving with bikinis for the second song. While the AA female singer was singing, here came a BB female singer dancing on the stage(with cardigan on) waiting for her turn.

Usually, the AA female would walk down the stage and shake hand with ONLY the gentleman while singing with solely her bikinis on. From my observation, those men would keep eyeing on the singer while their wives/girlfriends who sat next to them looking at the singer with a skeptical angry look.

After AA female singer finished singing, the BB female singer would sing the third song on stage. For the fourth song, the BB female singer once again would take off her coat and walk around the dinner tables while CC singer dancing on the stage. This routines kept repeating with different sexy singers appearing on stage.

See the distance between the sexy singer and the newly wed couples. I wonder why they were facing behind the singer. Normally wedding couples sit facing the stage so that they could see what’s going on the stage.

My homestay parent told me the wedding program was even worst during their time (many many years ago) where the strippers would wear NOTHING and some of them would even sit on the bridegroom's lap. I couldn’t stop imagine what would the atmosphere look like back on those days.

He told me the program was meant to be like this to entertain the crowds. If not, the crowd would easily get bored (mostly strangers on each table) and most probably would end up with undesirable matters to deal with.

The kids felt embarrassed when the singer approached them

The mini coat the girl has could barely cover her tops

Spotted someone took picture of the female (not me). She quickly hid behind the other girl. The reason was she’s still single and not married, would not want to expose herself in bikinis to the public (via internet)

Last but not least, a usual scene we could see during Chinese wedding

All in all, I enjoyed my time with my friends at the wedding, not because of the sexy girls, I am glad to be able to expose myself with others’ culture/lifestyles. Every race/place has its own unique identity that we ought to respect. As a Hakka myself, this event intrigues me to learn more about Hakka, the people and the food.

Hope you guys enjoy reading this post. Feel free to leave a comment as you like.

Have a nice weekends. xoxo

Tragedy found GOLD

Few days ago, I came across a saddening article which instantly reminded a story of my past that I believe only my family, she and him know. Meanwhile, the article below was about a man died after free falling from the sky while paragliding.

A British father has plunged 45 metres to his death in Turkey, while tandem paragliding with his daughter.

The Daily Mail reports Glenn Hudson, 50, fell on to a beach when his harness broke while the pair were being towed through the air by a boat.

His daughter, Emma, 25, looked on in horror as her father fell to the ground in front of hundreds of holidaymakers.

"We were up there for about ten minutes and suddenly he dropped. I was right next to him, we'd been chatting happily and then he was gone," Miss Hudson reportedly said.

"Then it seemed to take forever to get me down. Dad was lying on the beach below and I was still dangling above."

Hmm… Why am I relating paragliding to my life? You would know soon~

N years ago, I went backpacking with my best buddies. Our first stop was Penang. The second day of our unplanned trip, we hitch hiked from the butterflies farm to Batu Feringgi.

Once we reached there, instantly I was attracted by the colorful “lolipop” appearing in the sky. I have forgotten the exact name for the lolipop thing. I guess it was called parachuting. I kept persuading my friends to play with me but to no avail, they were not interested. Anyhow, after bargaining hard with the person in charge, I only agreed to play for RM20.

My first time parachuting ^^

The most enjoyable moment was when I were high up the sky, I felt like I was flying and being able to see the beauty of mother nature which was just underneath my feet was truly amazing.

After a few minutes

Something has gone wrong.

I  began to free fall from the sky. And just a few seconds, my whole body dropped into the deep sea. harshly

At the very moment, I felt weird rather than shocked. When I was started to fall, I thought the boat man was playing the “banana boat game” where when you were playing the banana boat, you were ought to drop into the sea eventually. But I was wondering how could it be the banana boat trick as I was high up in the sky now.banana-boat

When I was in the deep sea, strong waves kept pushing me, I hardly can open my eyes to see my surrounding. From far, I saw the boat man driving towards me and drove me to the shore. He told me the engine was not functioning all in a sudden and offered me another ride for compensation. Without thinking twice, I agreed.

This was the most precious moment I had which I remembered till now.

My friends thought that I was going to die and while I was combating with the waves, she cried. *awww. deeply touched*

Fortunately, the second round of parachuting went smoothly and I landed safely on the ground with joy =)

This sapo changed her mind and wanted to play right after my turn >< How weird she was.

And, she landed safely as well.

Back to the above article, if only if I started to fall when I was suppose to land on the ground like the British man, what would happen to me? I couldn’t think and I wouldn’t want to think the consequences. Some of you might think why on earth do I agree to play twice after the first tragedy. Hmm.. Seriously, I have no idea too because at the very moment, my mind was just having the desire of playing it again =D Yea, I know I was too playful ><

Through that incident, I realize that some of my current friends are irreplaceable. True friends are only appeared when you are in trouble but not when you are somebody.

My partner was enjoying the sunset scenery. lolz

IMG_4488

Seriously, the sunset scenery at Batu Feringgi was freaking awesome and beautiful~

IMG_4492

Sapo and I were enjoying too~ We were lying down on a hammock. Awww~ feel like relaxing my mind and body now from the hectic and challenging semester.

That was basically part of my backpacking experience N years ago.

~the end~

p/s: Gold from the title means TRUE FRIENDSHIP =)

Well, thinking back, thanks God that I’m still alive and could still enjoy every moment with great people.

True enough, life is unpredictable. R.I.P the British man.

Love of MilkSick

Hot milo prepares by mum is always sweeter and warmer than anyone’s else. Dad’s encouragements ring my ears no matter how down or unprepared am I. Sis’ laughter and fashion sense always amaze me and I miss her companion badly. Bro’s cool lame jokes and real facts talks always fill in my mind. The clock which is hanging at the middle of the living room telling everyone that it’s time for Grandpa’s favorite TV news, no one can switch the channel and the volume must be turned up triply. What’s more?

I wish I am in my own house now giggling and telling lame jokes with all my loved ones, traveling together and playing Chinese chess with Grandpa. I wanted to go home badly not because of traveling here and there, I just want to spend more time with all my loved ones. awwwwwwwwwww :(

I want to support my ex-school band concert and bro’s performance too.

I want to cook a delicious meal for my family and close friends.

I want to play violin with all my buddies.

I want to spend more time with all of them.

I actually went back to see the old videos of CW Concert Band in youtube.

Though we have lots of flaws here and there, but the main purpose was not only to promote musicianship, we were on stage to play as a team and to learn from mistakes as well. Anyhow, it was a good experience for me. Without joining this band, I would know nothing about violin, conducting & orchestra.

My first partly solo performance

Mamma Mia. Alright, my conducting went haywire..

Phantom of the Opera, the song that we kept practicing and I did enjoy it lots.

p/s: Do click like if you like any of the video posted above or any comments are welcomed too.

After crapping so much nonsense, this is the main point. Feel free to go if you are staying nearby or enjoy listening to oldies songs. Do support them as they have put much effort in this upcoming concert.

Jia you everyone :D

Alright, it’s time for bed now.

Seriously miss my family & violin babe……

Shoot, all the sentimental songs that have been listening to recently are making me emo easily.

A day with Q 30.11.2008

Once upon a time, I have fallen in love with a girl calls Q. She is a nice and sweet girl.

One day, I coincidentally bumped into her in a famous cendol stall at Seremban. Hence, I decided to follow her whenever she goes.

After that, I followed her to the "HUTAN REKREASI". She hasn't noticed anything and having fun all the time.

She was so happy to play with the swings and all the children thinggy. I wanted to join her badly but scared that she noticed about my presence and gone crazy.

When she turned her head back, I quickly hide behind the chain =.=

To no avail, she saw me. Miraculously, she did not mad with me but invited me to take pic with her. I was way too happy =)

She scolded me why I so lame. Hence, we took another more serious pic together.

Pics above are not being photoshoped, just using those features from my camera.
